COMMITMENT/INTIMACY
Recap: Luke 7:36-50
- Are you more like the Pharisee or the woman?
- Do you want what Jesus can do for you or do you want Jesus?
- Are you an enthusiastic admirer or a committed follower?
Read: Matthew 9:9-13 (online KJV/NIV)
Compare Matthew 9:9 vs. Luke 5:28
(What detail does Luke provide that Matthew does not? What do you make of this?)
- Kurios (koo'-ree-os): master, owner, one who has control, possessor
- Doulos (dü'-los): slave, servant attendant; one who gives himself up to another's will.
Note: James1:1 "James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings."
QUESTIONS
What are some of the consequences of sin?
- Where do we find joy?
(Psalm 51:12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.) - Where do we find rest?
(Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.) - How does Jesus treat the despicable, sinful, traitor Matthew?
do you still love me??? Stain represents guilt, shame, fear --- uncond love, acceptance, grace. Joy of my salvation….
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Matthew – massive disappointment to parents. Another name – Levi – expected to serve Lord like Levites. Set aside to be spiritual leader. Tax collector – taking money from own people and giving to Romans. Corruption, detested by Jews. WE DON'T MEASURE UP – ALL HAVE SINNED. Live in denial, blame other people, live in guilt. Matthew at point no longer trying to hide stain – faults there for all to see. Jesus to Matthew – "follow me." Life-changing ; calls him Lord. "Lord" – Greek Kurios – a slavery word – kurios was OWNER of slave. You are dulous – greek word for slave. OBEY!
Doing same thing at 42 years old as kid. FIND FREEDOM WHEN SLAVE TO JESUS. TRUE FREEDOM ONLY FOUND IN JESUS. Inside of shame bondage death – joy, grace, eternal life. Slave to: possessions, pleasures, what other people thought of them. Broken and bruised – jesus take pieces of life turn into beautiful mosaic. All who are weary – find rest for your soul.
MATTHEW – one of disciples, follower, writer of Gospel. His grace doesn't just invite us to follow, it teaches us to follow. BUT GOD CAN CHANGE ANYONE. Jesus says: follow me. WHEN WILL YOU LET GOD'S GRACE REPLACE YOUR GUILT? WHEN WILL YOU RESPOND TO JESUS' WORDS: FOLLOW ME. (Zacchaeus)
